Audiofly Vs Paul Harris "Miscalate"

Out Now on Rekids

As much as I love electronic dance music as a whole, there is an element of this so called underground movement that of late has seriously begun to grate on my nerves. It's unfortunate but there seems to be this continued whining and carry on about how the quality of music has progressively gotten worse over the years. What utter rubbish! As such, I'm beginning to think that people are either lazy, deaf or anally sticking to one genre because this year, for me, has seen some of the best releases of varying styles of dance music that I've witnessed. A prime example of such a release is the collaboration between Audiofly and Paul Harris in the guise of 'Miscalate'. This is one release that not only has a dancefloor appeal but is creative and truly interesting to hear.

The Original Mix of 'Miscalate' is a richly organic number that paces itself at a hypnotic tempo. There are snippets of a female vocal interspersed throughout which lends an air of the ethereal to its overall sound. Beginning on a subdued tip, the track builds at a gradual momentum before a subtle hesitation and then quite literally exploding into something that I can only describe as an aural seduction. The mainstay of 'Miscalate', and one of the things that makes it such a successful tune, is that warmly padded melody that keeps it quite grounded while the vocal sample hovers above. Listening to this is much like being wrapped in a blanket of warm melodies and as such I can't help but be seduced by its deeper qualities. This particular version is such well structured tune that becomes more and more pleasing to the ear with every consecutive listen.

The flipside offers up the Partial Arts Remake, which is in a league of its own from the very beginning. Opening with a more bouncy beat, a stripped back feel is made apparent with the introduction of varying sound effects. For the first two minutes, it feels a little industrial and I was left wondering where exactly this version was going to head. My hesitations were kicked to the curb when the full depth of the track soon came to the forefront. Where the original was almost mellow, in the hands of Partial Arts 'Miscalate' is anything but that. The bass is more prominent but never overbearing while a trumpet like melody is now the focal point and has managed to change the mood of the track completely. This has to be one of the most interesting reinterpretations of an original that I've had the pleasure to hear so far this year and while there's a lot going on in regards to the effects used, it all fits together perfectly. Compared to the original, this particular "remake" is almost unrecognisable apart from the token use of the vocal sample. The dance floor appeal of this track is quite obvious in the use of that consistently bouncing beat but this is one track that really makes you want to listen to it from a production point of view. Simply put, it's quite the stunner.

With 'Miscalate' being an initial release, the collaboration between Audiofly and Paul Harris is an extremely successfully partnership that offers something special for fans of both these talented artists. While I'm already a fan of Audiofly's work, I think it was a stroke of genius to join forces with Paul Harris. Together they have composed a tune that is both creative and sophisticated in its powers of musical seduction. Where the real strength of this release lies, is the clever addition of Partial Arts on remix duty which really puts this whole release on another level. Presented here are two unique tunes that, while both having great dance floor appeal, represent the more interesting facets and moods of dance music that can be found today. I really hope this partnership continues because this particular release is quite brilliant.
