Chimera "Music"

Out Now on Silver Planet Recordings

Hywel Dunn Davies as made many excellent tracks as both Souldriver on Hope Recordings, and not to mention his part in the creation of Mainline's huge single for Bedrock. However it is quite possibly Chimera that he is most well known for, with the singles 'Poison' and Sasha favourite 'In Deep' being his previous two singles for Silver Planet. 'Music' is his third for the label, coming a while after the last. The question is, how does it compare?

Chimera's 'Club Mix' brings together tough percussive beats and deep electronic synths, creating an alien sounding groove under which an old skool acid style bassline loops. Bleepy analogue sounds twinkle deep within the track, rising to an uplifting melody solo where carefully timed key changes cause a fluctuating effect which lends a spacious effect to the intricate melodies, thus adding to the tempo during the final section of this melodic house track.

It is however the 'Breaks Mix' which stands out as the pick of the pack here, a piercing siren like melody leading into the track, rising and dropping as the first layer of tight, crunchy breakbeats shuffle in softly. The mix then drops into the main break section where the beats coil themselves around the many synth lines that run through the heart of this emotive upbeat rework, dropping into a retro style groove where the beats led, before re-introducing the melody at the peak, before fading it out slowly at the end.

Whilst not quite up there in terms of quality with the superb 'In Deep', this is by no means a bad track, but lacks that extra something that 'In Deep' had. The breaks mix however is quality and will go down quite nicely with the prog breaks massive.
