Emjae "Hipster / Capricorn"
Out Now on Release RecordsRelease Records has risen to become a hallmark of excellence in the progressive scene. With the fantastic 'Midnight Express EP' already out on Release Grooves, Emjae once again steps up to the plate with this new single. Does this release live up the standard? Let's find out.
'Hipster' gets us started with a crunchy four on the floor groove, with a vocal hook saying "you've got the rhythm, you’ve got the sound" penetrating the surface of the vibe and repeating over and over. The sound design is dry and a bit retro, but Emjae pulls this off very tastefully and effectively. This track manages to paradoxically be both very subtle and very fun at the same time. The production, hook, and development are all fairly basic, but they fit together to make a bold impression. Part progressive, part electro, and all groove, this one gets a thumbs-up.
'Capricorn' begins with a bit-crushed kick drum which is soon complimented by a squelchy synth melody and additional electro style percussion. A wonderful bouncy analog sounding bassline joins in, rounding out the song’s framework and solidifying its quirky electro style. The bass is run through several audio treatments to keep things interesting as a vocal hook passes through. This song doesn't try to do too much, but what’s there is thoroughly charming. It put a smile on my face the first time I heard it, and should do the same to any club patron.
As the electro influenced sound continues to gain popularity in the dance music world, it's great to see a release which shows that an increase in quantity doesn't necessarily mean a drop in quality. While there isn't any aspect of the production that stands out as completely remarkable, it's a solid trip all the way through and would make a great addition to any DJs collection.
