Hybrid "I'm Still Awake"

Out Now on Distinctive Records

The third single to be lifted from Hybrid's second album is 'I'm Still Awake'. For me this is a somewhat odd choice as it didn't particularly strike me as one of the standout tracks on the album. Nevertheless here it is, and like previous single 'True To Form' the track features the vocals of Mckenzie's Adam Taylor and has been remixed for this release by Planet Funk and those chi-town boys Grayarea. with further remixes to come from Christian J and Sud.

The 'Planet Funk Mix' sees Alex Neri add an addictive house groove and plenty of acoustic style effects and instruments to the original's main elements. The result is a live sounding mix that pumps away, Adam's vocals floating freely over the top. An Indie style guitar refrain moves things into the main section of the mix where synth lines and the awesome hook take control, the usual Planet Funk production values oozing out of every pore of this classy rework.

'Grayarea' really do go to town with their reinterpretation, heavy drums leading the assault, supported by a bassline that quite literally takes no prisoners. As the mix rolls along, dirty stabs send ripples through the groove, the vocal placed right in the thick of the carnage. Dark and dirty, with a breakdown that sounds like Nirvana on acid, the crazy gang excel with yet another explosive and energetic remix, the kind we've come to know and love from the trio of drunkards.

Two excellent remixes that add a new dimension to the track, the Planet Funk Mix giving it more of a mass appeal, whilst Grayarea take it firmly to the centre of the dancefloor. Well worth checking out for sure.
