Ian Pooley "Nightscape EP"

Out Now on Simple Records

German producer Ian Pooley should need no introduction as his stellar productions have graced the scene for over 15 years. As well as his original productions, he has produced a vast array of remixes for the likes of Green Velvet, Daft Punk and The Cardigans just to name a few. The 'Nightscape EP' marks Pooley's first release for 2009 and is a testament to the man's skill. He is still in top form and this release is one of the most intricate works I have had the pleasure of reviewing all year.

With a strong house theme, 'Nightscape' is the first track up. It juxtaposes a slightly glitched out lead synth over a smooth and sexy house bassline. The percussion is thick, heavy and very fitting. The track features a multitude of high and low points to keep the listener interested without sounding contrived at the same time. An absolutely stellar performance overall.

Next up is the Jupiter Mix of 'Difference'. It follows on the same path as the opening track whilst being a bit more driving at the same time. The elements build upon each other in true progressive fashion. There is a lot going on in all ranges of the production and it requires a few listens to digest everything, just like a good film. At the same time it never sounds cluttered.

The Eight Mix of 'Difference' strips things back a bit from the Jupiter Mix and takes us on a slightly less complex journey. For those who were a bit bewildered by the previous mix, you may prefer this one. This one is perhaps more suited to a club environment as the energy flows throughout in a more linear fashion without being dumbed down too much. This rounds off the release well by adding a touch of diversity.

It is impossible for me to pick a favourite on this EP as each track is magnificent in its own right. If you are getting bored with the current wave of "minimal house" productions flooding the scene at the moment but want a track that doesn't sound at all dated, then you are crazy not to go and buy this one right now. It has been a very long time since any track I have reviewed has been given the elusive score of "10" but this release is nothing short of deserving. This is electronic music at its finest.
