Lazy Fat People "Shinjuku EP"

Out Now on Wagon Repair Records

Swiss producers Mirko Loko and Raphael Ripperton have been creating quite a name for themselves under the Lazy Fat People guise. With releases on chic labels such as Border Community and Perc Trax, it isn't a surprise to see them here on Mathew Jonson's Wagon Repair imprint, which is home to some absolutely amazing releases, notably Jonson's own 'Marionette'. The title track from the Shinjuku EP has been floating around for some time now, receiving play from James Holden and the likes of.

Undoubtedly, people will be picking up the release for 'Shinjuku' itself. The track is built around a simplistic melody and a bassline which isn't too complex at all either. The percussion is also very linear. Yet somehow, all put together it creates a track which you can't help but get addicted to. Its catchy nature means it will likely be running through your head constantly after you hear it, and overall it proves that without going all out you can still create a successful tune. Whilst it will likely never gain a classic status, it is sure to be enjoyed while it is around.

'Tv20' is the minimal number which can be found on the flipside. It has much less melodic focus than 'Shinjuku', and I found it to be quite repetitive. It boasts a crunchy bassline, but apart from this the rest of the track consists of seemingly random blips and bleeps. This track didn't work for me at all, and I couldn't help but feel it was pushed out to complete the EP, when in reality it detracts from the power of the A side.

'Shinjuku' is a track you will likely either love or hate. I'm very fond of it at the moment and it certainly is up there with the quality I would expect of Wagon Repair. I did feel quite let down by the B Side however, and it isn't something which I would have expected from a label with such an excellent track record. However, the A side alone makes this EP worth it so it still comes with a high recommendation.
