Monkz "Canga Urania"
Out Now on Plastic FantasticThis is the first release for newcomers Monkz, three very talented young men from Budapest, Hungary. Shootie has been involved with music since the early age of 13, and is now a studio engineer, DJ Supacurtis was the first DJ from Hungary to play in Ibiza, and Gulu has a musical history in jazz, funk and drums. All three are resident DJ’s at the biggest club in Hungary, Pacha. Their first outing for Plastic Fantastic is a great release. ‘Canga Urania’ is a beefed up tribal monster, with a break-laden mix on the flip.
The ‘Original’ mix starts up with groovy tribal drums. There’s a big vibe, and a lot of drive, while quick sounds start to fall in. A sample of a man’s voice lays in the mix. The voice is trippy and eerie, with a lot of delay. Synths start flying, while a low pulsing bassline moves in underneath. We drop into a metallic drum break. The voice moves in, sounds drop, and we pop into a sexy groove that takes us to the end. ‘Canga Urania’ is a very well produced song with nice sounds, and nice textures. This is definitely something for a packed floor.
The ‘Pilot Biscuit’ mix changes it up into a break beat version. The tribal drumming starts us off, but is low in the mix. There are more hand drums than before, and some other layers of tone. The song starts building and building, until it busts into a fat break. The bass is lighter, and the synths are changed into cute arpeggiations. Dropping off into a different break, and changing the song up with more clicks, and sounds. Layers of the voice move throughout, while the beats kick hard. This is a great remix.
We’ll definitely be seeing more from Monkz very soon. ‘Canga Urania’ has already been receiving support from John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Chris Fortier, and more. This is a very promising start from these new artists on Plastic Fantastic.
