Monkz "Double Penetration EP"
Out Now on Plastic FantasticWith a series of previous singles on Plastic Fantastic and one on Alternative Route, the Hungarian trio known as the Monkz have had a busy 2004 to date, and close the year with this new EP entitled 'Double Penetration', which also happens to be their third release on the Plastic Fantastic label. Laying down retro, funky sounds backed with clever percussion, its what we have come to expect from these three producers.
'Zakka' is a thick percussive tune with hints of 80s retro zaps and a wall of twisted sounds. Vocal bits along with an ambient synth start in, while a powerful washing sound rolls over and the beats drop in chugging. A cool bouncy but very dirty and gnarly bassline sets nicely in the back, while the drums keep changing shape with added claps, toms and high hats. Vocal samples continue filling the atmosphere, while more and more synths are added on top. The retro theme is continued as the groove sets deep, gradually bringing the track to it's end.
'Nekke' is very similar to 'Zakka', but has a cool sparkling synth that lifts the song up and out of the 80s retro sounds. Crisp housey drums make up the percussion with a solid groove setting in. Smooth synths sweep across the beats, while laser zaps, drum changes, and percussive elements keep the song moving. At the break a lush synth appears and lifts the tune back into the kicking drums and spins on out till the end changing through various chords.
Monkz once again deliver their usual brand of house for the Plastic Fantastic label, but the lack of variation in this EP means it fails to penetrate once, let alone twice, and is not up the level of quality we have seen in their previous work at all.
