Out Now on Sexonwax Recordings

Omid 16B is a true chameleon in the electronic dance music scene. One minute he’s unleashing house bombs, the next slices of ambient soul. He’s also part of the dream team that is SOS, alongside Desyn Masiello and Demi. After the release of their critically acclaimed contribution to the “Balance” compilation series, Omid dropped his second album “3 Ears and 1 Eye” last year. Now he’s back with a new EP on his Sexonwax Recordings label.

Memories of his illustrious past are quickly faded on opener “Dub The House”, which is a chugging house number. Despite some melodic synth stabs, this track toils in self-indulgence for nearly ten minutes and never goes anywhere. A very disappointing start.

“The Tone” begins with some eerie keys, almost reminiscent of John Carpenter’s work. But then the beat hits and you know Omid has crafted another “deep” track. However, like the last track, it just continues to meander and build but nothing memorable ever comes to fruition.

The closer “To Run To” is the best out of the three but that’s not saying much. Omid tries on some squelchy synths this time around and the groove is better for dancing but again, just nothing to write home about.

While Omid 16B is a very talented producer, I get the feeling these tracks were designed to just be experiments for his DJ sets because there is no appeal for repeated listens. The whole EP suffers from the worst fate possible: it’s boring.
