Pete Tong & Superbass "Wonderland"

Out Now on Renaissance Recordings

Pete Tong was once quoted as saying that despite his standing in the dance music industry, he had no intention of entering into the world of music production himself. Thankfully he wasn't true to his word and after a couple of false starts we are now enjoying the fruits of his labour. Reforming his partnership with Dirty Vegas' Paul Harris and Jay P (as Superbass) to create a rousing partnership, 'Tongy' has delivered 'Wonderland', a track that takes its name from his Ministry of Sound residency of this year.

The 'Original Mix' is minimal, deep and infectious, a bobbing bassline takes grip of one's aural palette while an intricate weave of effects and stabs take us to the track's crux. The melodic arpeggiated synth is simple and beautiful in equal measure, complimenting the bassline perfectly. The reverberation increases constantly as the dancefloor holds its breath in anticipation, as an erupting crescendo strips things back again and again. Things get a little crazier towards the end as the boys get creative with the controls, yet it's the constant bassline that keeps the track together and interest never wanes. Simply excellent.

The 'Superbass Dub' in truth doesn't stray too far from the original. A little lighter in its approach and a little quirkier in its execution, there are some variations to the rhythm. The bassline doesn't change at all, however, and this can be said for the majority of parts. I couldn't help but feel a little let down by this fact. As great as the original is, I felt a shift in direction for the B-side could have resulted in a first class release for Renaissance. Maybe there are more mixes to come.

Overall, a very good release indeed.
