Quivver Feat Nikki Mack "Not Givin Up"

Out Now on Boz Boz Recordings

John Graham has built quite a following since his days with Tilt, throwing down releases with his solo projects Quivver and Space Manoeuvres. Over the years he has unleashed some timeless pieces of work that have probably ended up on quite a few all time top ten lists. Since 2003 John has used his label Boz Boz to help deliver the Quivver sound out unto the masses, and here now with its 12th release he keeps the Quivver mantra going strong.

With 'Not Givin' Up' John leaves the vocals to Nikki Mack who champions the vocal house vibe with ease. The release doesn't feature an original mix, but instead kicks off with a 'Quivver Mix' on the A side. Here the classic Quivver percussion is laid down next to a slippery bassline and some classic house elements filtered and tweaked out into a fluid groove. Nikki's vocals slip in and out of the mix for awhile, just teasing us with her elegant voice until the break where under a chunky groove and bright synth stabs she belts it out. This record follows suit to the 'Four Fatties EP' very nicely, and shows that John's not afraid to get a little funky once in awhile.

On the flip, the up and coming duo of D-Nox & Beckers adds their flavour. Here a punchy bass kick and hi-hat progression leads us into the track, keeping a simpler (yet forceful) vibe than the original. A rolling bassline dominates the speakers, while edits of the vocals bounce off the groove. These guys take more of a traditional approach with their mix, running some filtering over the vocals and dropping some classic styled synths throughout. This mix definitely has the current state of the scene in mind, keeping it simple but with enough to get a floor jumping, which makes it a good complement to the A side.

Definitely can't say that out of all his releases this would be my favorite, yet it is growing on me with each listen. A strong release no doubt, and will surely go down well with DJs and Quivver fans alike.
