Solar Plexus "Solar Plexus"
Out Now on Sexonwax RecordingsOriginally released in 1993 on Entity Records, 'Solar Plexus' became a much sought after record after it's inclusion on the inaugural Renaissance Mix Collection by Sasha and Digweed. The self titled project of Jay Relf has been a collector's item ever since, with copies of the original 12" changing hands for obscene amounts of money. Now ten years on, and the track returns once more, with several fans of the original coming together to bring it into the 21st century. First up are those Idiots, Omid 16B, Desyn Masiello and Leon Roberts, going toe to toe with the original, in a classic case of new meets old.
'The Idiots' construct a wicked shuffling groove which controls their remix, with acid drops and analogue beats creating a unique bassy vibe that pushes things forward, ripples shimmering through the bottom heavy soundscape, bringing out the cool vocal hook in a minimal yet effective fashion, complimented by shaker percussion and hypnotic techy sounds which are reflective of much of this trio's work.
Slip on the 'Original Mix', and the big synth chords so prevalent in many old progressive house classics great us, with an epic mood being created right from the start. Moving on, and a traditional rolling groove complete with vocal stab at the end drives the track on and on, looped percussion and beats providing a turbulent bassline over which the superb vocal has to navigate. No big breakdowns here, just classic progressive house at it's finest, and a reminder of the old cliche that 'they don't make them like they used to'.
An interesting choice for a re-release, but one that stands out well even today. The Idiots update the original in a unique and satisfying fashion, with further remixes to come which should ensure that this track captures not only the minds, but hearts of a new generation.
