Trisco "Fashionista"

Out Now on Whoop Records

Harvey Dawson sprang on the scene nearly 6 years ago with 'Musak', a tune that would help define a part of the progressive culture during the year 2000. That would spark a slew of hype surrounding Trisco, finding him remixing artists from ATB to the Chemical Brothers. However on the original production front he's taken it slow, keeping his releases as Trisco and Wonderland Avenue to one every few years. Coming off a diesel release (Southpaw) on Hope Recordings, we now find him on the infamous Whoop! Recordings with 'Fashionista'.

With tracks like 'Ultra' and 'All About You' you would expect a certain sound to permeate through to this release, but with 'Fashionista' all bets are off. The original mix kicks off with a simple bass stab progression that picks up into a bigger, bit-crushed stab before a rolling synth progression knocks it up even more. Some classic arps and stabs run throughout the mix, keeping this geared towards that minimal electro-ish style that everyone seems to be clamoring for at this minute.

Here on the B-side we get the dub treatment. Harvey strips it down even more, with a very simple kick/snare/hat groove that supports the bassline and some slightly different synth arps than heard earlier. The breakdown is mellowed out here as well, as it quickly brings us back into the main groove. A nice low pad creeps its way into the mix towards the end to add some needed tension, but unfortunately it’s too little too late. This mix (even being a dub mix) really needed a bit more beef for me.

Compared to prior releases, this has got to be the weakest Trisco release out of the catalog. The track comes off very disposable and almost tongue-and-cheek as it blends too easily into the pile of nameless electro shit that's being released lately. It's a total shame too as both Trisco and Whoop! Have delivered the goods on many other occasions, and have made them a staple in DJs collections including mine. Here's to hoping for the next release (with both parties) to return to that dynamic quality the scene is in dire need for.
