Young American Primitive "Voyage To The Great Attractor / Mother Earth Dream"

Out Now on Yaplab Recordings

Greg Scanavino first brought his skills into the light in the early 90s San Francisco house movement. Several singles and an artist album later he had created quite a name for himself. However, after 1996 the labels seemed to lose interest in him, and dropped some lined up releases. Making a return in 2001 with a slightly different sound to remix the classic "Apollo Vibes", we again lost sight of him until this year, when his "Voyage To The Great Attractor" was picked up by Jonathan Lisle for use in his Original Series compilation. Gaining some nice response, here we see it with its own release, along an afterthought added to the flipside.

Clocking it at just on thirteen minutes, one would hope that "Voyage For The Great Attractor" had a few movements or some interesting changes along the way. Which leads me to my one complaint about the track. Its point could be gotten across in a much shorter timeframe, and at times it feels as though elements are unnaturally dragged out longer than they should be. But that aside, there is much to appreciate about the composition. Some haunting melodies fused with tight percussion, and after a build up which creates some serious anticipation, the track takes another unique turn, bringing in some more twisted effects and sub melodies. A very interesting track indeed, and is certainly one to turn heads.

"Mother Earth Dream" sadly doesn't live up to its counterpart. This one is slightly shorter, at just over eleven minutes, however, if one listens to the track ten seconds in, and again at five minutes in, there is not much difference to be noticed. At such a length, time should be taken to craft an intricate introduction, as many of you know I am a fan of big introductions. I feel the first few minutes of the track have been wasted, as they do not build up mood or atmosphere at all, in fact they do little for the track in the scheme of things. A pulsing lower end hook is about all that makes up the track, and after eleven minutes of this pulsing, one is hanging out for something to change!

It is very unfortunate that "Mother Earth Dream" drags down the release so much, as I can still highly recommend that people check out "Voyage To The Great Attractor". With its tough atmosphere and changing styles to keep you interested, it is easy to see that a lot of time has been put into its production. It seems that upon being scheduled for a release, the B Side was thrown together as an afterthought to complete the release, when it ironically does the opposite.
