Yunus Vs Subsky "Step One EP"
Out Now on Red Flag CollectiveRed Flag Collective is a new label formed by some of Turkey's finest up and coming artists with a mission to showcase the movement happening within Istanbul and it's surrounding towns and districts, and presenting them on the world stage. What better way to launch the label then, than with an EP from two of the country's most well known names, Yunus Guvenen and Subsky. Coming together and producing two rare collaborations, the 'Step One EP' showcases the more experimental side of both producers, which is one of the ideas the label aims to push forward.
'Erotic Sumo' is an energetic track with an old skool melodic feel. Bouncing snares and a deep and vibrant bassline start the groove moving, before the melodic chords start to appear. Building into the main section, there is some terrific chord progression, as waves of melody wash against each other, layering onto the groove. A change in tempo lets the beats led with a trippy melody hook rising up and over the top as secondary arrangements bubble underneath. A swirling effect leads us into the break, taking things deeper for a heads down hypnotic finale where the underlying production really comes into play. A modern interpretation on old skool trance that will captivate the dancefloor.
'Airfuzz' is the first time the duo have put together a breakbeat track, both in a solo and collaborative capacity. However, you would be forgiven for thinking they are past masters in the genre as the heavy beats and rumbling groove lead us in from the start. Synths pan back and forth across the deep soundscape, rising up in gated fashion through the gaps in the arranged beats. A wild melodic hook takes over as the beats drop out, a guitar refrain backing the drum percussion with the synths floating through once more, leading into the second half. Tougher beats and intense soaring effects seal the deal, with a killer melodic hook that acts like an aftershock to the main impact to the beats. A potent and dynamic track that is not to be underestimated.
Both tracks ooze depth and intricacy, which reflects the personality of both producers to a tee. The 'Step One EP' launches this new label in style, and if this is a measure of the kind of quality we can expect as time goes on, then this will become a label to watch carefully over the next few months as each release promises to deliver something different.
