Coloursound "Small Phatt One"

Out Now on Vapour Recordings

Coloursound is the collaborative alias of Kasey Taylor and Evolution, which when you think about it should make good for some rocking tracks. 'Small Phatt One' is their debut work, but does it deliver what one would expect.. let's dig in and find out..

Deep, dark and moody would be how I would describe the 'Original Mix' with its pulsating heartbeat sound and sinister synths dropping into a dark groove, but that's about as much as can be said about it. It reminds me in a way of the sound that was being championed on Plastica two years ago, and does nothing to really evolve those ideas into 2003. Not looking good so far, which is surprising considering the trio who worked on this.

The remix comes from Kasey Taylor on a solo outing under his 'Katai' guise, who strips it back, lowers the mood and slips in a rolling b-line which seperates the sounds, allowing him so slot in some shifting effects and a stirring melody that rattles over the top. This is what the original should have been and a lot more, but the little guy from down under who's built like a sherman tank shows that he can go the distance alone.

Thankfully Kasey was able to turn it around on the flipside otherwise this would have been rather dismal. As it is it's only worth a peep for his tightly produced and floor shaking mix, but Vapour have done better than this previously.
