Hamel & Mollison "Break The Cycle"

Out Now on Teknology Records

Bill Hamel and Sam Mollison are two people who shouldn't need an introduction in the progressive scene. With a vast knowledge of what they like, they turn out a lovely, rich, vocal song, featuring the voice only Sam Mollison could have. Break The Cycle really takes you on a journey, and offers you a full on mix, as well as a dub, which both take on different ideas and feelings.

We start out with the Hamel and Mollison mix, which is a vocal dream. Nice chunky beats, and layers of electro stabs create the mood. A charging synth comes over us, and creates the dramatic layers, while Sam's voice permeates through the hard shell. Airy washes fall across the song, while teasing Sam's voice. His voice is dark, and brutal, but still magical, and lovely. It's a very twisted world. Many quick breaks take us into the filtered drum part, which spits us out again, into the world of Sam.

On the flip we get a rework by Mr. Hamel himself. Very similar with the drums patterns, and the stabs of electro, but a little bit deeper, with so much more bass. The bass is big, and full, and the space is now filled with some tribal beats. A filtered voice lays over the song, washing over you and twisting above you. Sam sings again, and this time it's a little bit lower and hidden under all the drums. Following his voice, a layer of sound comes up and moves into the thick textures. We fall off into the break, and we are pushed into nothing. Everything comes in again, but this time it's a bit more minimal and darker.

A top-notch tune, created by two of the best. Sam's voice is in top form, as well as Hamel's drums which always get better. If you love vocals, and are big into Hamel's sound, this should be in your box.
