Samsara "Afterthought / Looking Glass"

Out Now on Yoshitoshi Recordings

Samsara is Naveen G, a full time medical student, dj and producer who originally hails from New York, before making his way over to Chicago where he studied for his undegraduate degree. After being turned onto dance music via raves in the early part of he mid 90s, he soon put hand to spinning as the decade drew to a close, and quickly delved into production, teaming up with Pat Foosheen for a remix of Pat's Automaton track on UK label Zone Recordings, and quickly followed this up with two original tracks which were quickly snapped up by Yoshitoshi and subsequencly 'Afterthough' was signed to Satoshi Tomiie's Nu Breed. Here that very track is present along with his other track 'Looking Glass', so let's see what all the fuss is about..

Afterthought is what you could call a moody groovier. chopped up scattered percussion clashing with large basslines whilst a deeply attention catching breathing sample vibrates away within the track, causing the tension within the sounds to build in accordance. A dark, eerie yet powerful production which shows that this producer has many great ideas still to be unleashed.

Looking Glass keeps with the dark theme on a far more evil tip. Menacing basslines smash into a house groove as percussions softly cower away in the background. It's sparse use of samples help to create a mysterious and sinister atmosphere which will keep you hooked on the dancefloor and make you wonder what to expect next. Warped but addictive.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Naveen has already gone on to produce further material such as 'Lost Mysticism' which has been picked up by Chug Records, and a foray into breaks entitled 'Keeper Of 5' has already been on rotation in the playlist of fast rising dj Jonathan Lisle. 2002 and beyond looks like a great year for this new producer.
